Memorial Scholarship
|
| This prestigious scholarship
honors the memory and legacy of Sheila Knight
Sammons, Co-Director of the Vero Beach High School
Band from 1980 until her passing on Sept. 10, 1995.
Sheila Knight Sammons dedicated herself to her
band students and made significant contributions to
the excellence and the continuing traditions of the
Vero Beach High School Band program. Recipients of
this scholarship should consider it as a reflection
of the honor given to and the high expectations of
Sheila Knight Sammons. |

| General
Provisions
|
|
The purpose of this scholarship
is to provide funds for eligible recipients for
educational expenses, including tuition, books, room
and board, at institutions of higher learning
("Collegiate Scholarship") and for the expenses for
summer music camp ("Summer Camp Scholarship").

A. |
Collegiate Scholarship:
|

 |
Applicant
must be a senior member of the VBHS Band
in good standing and have been a full time participant in the band for
four continuous years. |
|
|
 |
Applicant
must provide proof of acceptance to a four
year university or two year community
college for the fall semester. |
|
 |
Applicant
shall state their anticipated major (not
required to be a music major). |
|
 |
Applicant
must have a grade point average of 2.85 or
better (un-weighted). |
|
 |
One
letter of Recommendation from a member of
the community.
|
|
 |
One letter of
Recommendation from a member of the faculty other than the band directors.
|
|
 |
Applicant
must have demonstrated promise in achieving
goals. |
|
 |
Applicant
must have demonstrated leadership.
|
|
 |
Applicant
must attend an interview with the selection
committee.
|
|
 |
Applicant
must submit the official scholarship
application in its entirety by the stated
deadline. This application must be
notarized. |

Summer Scholarship
:
|

 |
Applicant
must be a freshman, sophomore, or junior
member of the Vero Beach High School Band in
good standing.
|
|

Applicant
must have a grade point average of 2.5 or
better (un-weighted).

the community. |

the faculty other than the band directors.

| Rules of Payment |
| Payment will be made directly to the college or music
camp. Payments will not be paid directly to the recipient. One half
payments will be paid per semester through the financial aid office of
the college. Failure of the recipient to enroll or attend college or
music camp shall constitute forfeiture of the scholarship. The
collegiate scholarship is not renewable. The Summer Scholarship is
renewable upon reapplication, however, preference may, at the discretion
of the committee, be given to new applicants.

| Source of Funding |
| The Sheila Knight Sammons Memorial Trust-Fund will
provide funds for these scholarships. This fund has been established
by the Sheila Knight Sammons family in cooperation with and under
agreement with the Fighting Indians Band Boosters, Inc. The Trust
Advisors will determine the amount and number of scholarships in any
given year. Any funds not awarded in a given year will be held in the
Trust for future years. |

| Selection Committee
|
| The selection committee shall normally consist of the
Sheila Knight Sammons Memorial Trust Fund Advisors. If an advisor(s)
is unable to serve on the selection committee for any reason including
conflict of interest, said advisor(s) may designate a replacement(s) as
deemed necessary by that advisor(s). |

| Submission of Application
|
| All applications shall be submitted to the guidance
office on the main campus of VBHS.
Applicant must submit the official scholarship
application in its entirety by the stated
deadline of
April 15, 2011. Applications received after the due date will not be considered. |

| Awarding of Scholarship
|
| Scholarships will be awarded at the annual VBHS
Awards Night. Recipients will be notified in advance to be present for
the presentation. |
| |
| Other Provisions |
|
All Applications, deliberations of the committee,
communications, and records of the selection committee are strictly
confidential including the evaluation of the band director provided to
the committee.
Funds may be withheld if it is determined that the
student has misrepresented him/her self in any way to the selection
committee or if the funds are misappropriated.
Recipients of the Summer Scholarship must agree to
fully participate in the VBHS Band for the full year following the
award. Failure to do so will obligate the student to repay the funds
spent on their behalf. Summer Scholarship funds must be used in the
immediate summer following the award. |

Funding for all scholarships is pending funds
available for 2011. The various scholarship
boards and or the Fighting Indians Band Boosters
will determine whether or not funds will be
available for scholarships this year as applicable
to each individual scholarship. Unfortunately
due to the current budget situations some or all of
the scholarships listed MAY not be funded.
Final decisions as to funding will be announced
prior to May 15, 2011.
